A reddit post showing two male elephants sleeping, after getting drunk on corn wine and passing out has Redditors in awe as they admire the pair for living their best lives.
Reddit user ADarkcid shared the photo on Thursday morning to share the internet buzz about the pair from the Yunnan province in China.
“While humans carry out social distancing, a group of 14 elephants broke into a village in Yunan province, looking for corn and other food. They ended up drinking 30kg of corn wine and got so drunk that they fell asleep in a nearby tea garden,” the user wrote in their post.
Later in a comment noting that they didn’t research it, the user commented that they just think elephants are “awesome” and wrote that the giant mammals even remind them of some of their own friends.
“Of all the things that happened on Earth in all of time, I think the odds of something like this happening are quite big. Stupidly I didn’t search this but I went with my gut instinct,” ADarkcid wrote. “Elephants are awesome anyway, they always seem happy. Like one of those big friends (I’ve had one who was tall and a bit heavier) that’s just the sweetest most charitable guy(girl) ever.”
HGS Dhaliwal shared the photo to Twitter, so others could share in the online sensation.

In a Twitter thread, conservationist Parveen Kaswan wrote that elephants, like many humans especially your uncle at Thanksgiving that year Karen left him, have an affinity for alcohol and seek it out, often marking spots where they were successful so they can return to them. He also wrote that like a person arriving soberly late to a party long after the booze is gone, elephants get irritated by intoxicated people. “If they see drunk people they get irritated also, since it was not shared with them,” he tweeted. Kaswan also said that elephants seek out extra ripe fruits and areas where people make country liquor.
When they were all sober. In tribal belts people hide country made alcohol but somehow elephants find it. They mark the houses also where they found that last time. If they see drunk people they get irritated also, since it was not shared with them.
Some are surprised on knowing that Elephants like alcohol. They like it a lot. Even Mahua fruits & ripened pineapple, jackfruit. They dig the locations where tribals store that country made liquor. Waise this is time of Handiya, in tribal belts you will see many selling them.
Despite sharing fun facts about the drunk mammals, Kaswan also took time to acknowledge the struggle elephants have faced in China, writing that the species is very close to going extinct in the region.
“Today there are only some 250 elephants in whole China. There was a time when #elephants were present in all parts #China. As Thomas Trauttman says Human waged a 3000 year war there, and elephants lost. Now on verge of local extinction,” he wrote, also saying there are about 30,000 elephants in India. The conservationist also recommended Trauttman’s book Elephants and Kings.
