Her Royal Highness was then given a tour of the £10m hotel before meeting with special guests who had worked on its development.

She was then given a tour around the racecourse grounds before unveiling a plaque marking the official opening of the hotel.

It marked Princess Anne’s third visit to the course.

She has previously ridden as a jockey at the course and was also there in 1992 to mark the renovation of the grandstand.

The hotel first opened its doors to guests on July 31. More than 30 staff have been hired, with 95 per cent of them living in the area.

It is the first hotel to adjoin the racecourse in its 90-year history and is the latest addition to the growing Hampton by Hilton global portfolio in nearly 30 countries and territories.

The hotel boasts several unique features, including carpets marked out with well-known names involved in the horse racing industry. There is also a welcome wall featuring a woven horse.

Trophies and photographs of Hamilton are also placed around the hotel, which features a restaurant, a bar and a small fitness centre.

It is owned by Hamilton Park Racecourse and managed by Interstate Hotels & Resorts.

Vivien Currie was delighted at the royal visit, and said:“We were honoured to welcome HRH The Princess Royal back to the racecourse and it was a delight to mark the hotel’s opening in such a special way. A lot has changed at Hamilton Park Racecourse since Princess Anne’s last visit so it was wonderful to show her around the new hotel and introduce her to its unique features.

“Opening the new Hampton by Hilton has been an extremely rewarding project and the hotel is already proving to be very popular. It signifies the beginning of an exciting new era here at Hamilton Park.”
