Reading Jail Sale

A ROOM WITH A VIEW: Reading Gaol as seen from The Blade

READING gaol has been listed for sale on a property agent’s website, today, following the announcement from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) it had been put on the market.

The historic jail has been put up for sale on EG Property Link’s website where it has been described as a “unique freehold development opportunity”.

However, there are no details on how much the jail would cost to buy.

Instead, the price says “price on application” meaning the sellers must be contacted in order for potential buyers to obtain a price.

The property agent described the details of the Grade II listed prison.

They explained it is a “unique and exciting freehold development opportunity extending to approximately 3.49 acres (1.41 hectares) in central Reading”.

They continued: “Pre-application responses have been obtained from Reading Borough Council and Historic England, which in summary emphasise the importance of re-using the listed building element and confirms the principle of new development.

“This is subject to receiving the necessary planning and listed building consents.”

The prison, where playwright Oscar Wilde was incarcerated for homosexual offences, has recently been put on the market six years after it closed.

Campaigners such as Reading East MP Matt Rodda have expressed their concerns over the MoJ’s decision to sell the site to the highest bidder.

Mr Rodda explained: “I’m disappointed that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has advertised the prison to the highest bidder.

“However, I’m going to continue to campaign for it to be sold to the local community and I’m working with Reading Borough Council and local arts groups to see if an alternative community led bid can be developed.”
