The Macallan unveiled a new limited-edition whisky today that has an extra special unique twist: there’s a documentary made about it.
The whisky, Distil Your World: The London Edition, was made in collaboration with the Roca Brothers. Along with the release of the whisky, a new documentary, Distil Your World London, that follows the Roca Brother’s adventures through London is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
If you’re not familiar, the Roca brothers are the owners of Celler de Can Roca in Spain, which has been twice named Best Restaurant in the World. The Distil Your World Series on Amazon follows the brothers as they explore different cultures and cuisines.
“The places we visited, the people we met, all that now takes shape in this whisky – our own distillation of the London essence,” said Josep Roca. “There is part of umami, the subtle touch of curry, orange, vanilla and raisin. There are some special notes that are really rare to find.”
The documentary follows The Macallan Whisky Maker, Steven Bremner and the Roca brothers throughout their London journey after which they selected the perfect combination of six first fill European oak Oloroso seasoned casks to translate London’s values into an extraordinary single malt with unique tasting notes representing the spirit of the city.
“London is an international city, a melting pot of culture, cuisine, architecture, and art and its rich heritage and myriad of cultures, combined with a timeless spirit and an innovative nature, made it the ideal playing field for this journey of mastery,” said Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker at The Macallan. “It is not just about being there, but about immersing yourself and dedicating time to understand what’s underneath everything you see, and we are proud to have collaborated with the Roca brothers on this exploration. Like the London soul, our single malt whisky, matured in its unique sherry seasoned oak casks, delivers rich complexities, harmonious flavours, and vibrant aromas.”
So, what does London taste like?
Tasting notes describe aromas of nutmeg, sweet Earl Grey tea, orange caramel, lemongrass, kaffir lime, soy sauce and polished oak. On the palate you’ll get wood and curry spice, Earl Grey tea, treacle sweetness, aniseed. Slightly salty with a complex umami feel, and the whisky’s finish is described as long, viscous, complex and savoury.
The limited-edition whisky is in fact quite limited. Only 2,000 bottles of the whisky will be available worldwide. The whisky is packaged in a presentation box featuring a triangular engraving design to represent the map of London and red detailing inspired by the city’s red bricks.
Along with the whisky, the box also contains a book capturing the inspirations behind this particular expression as well as some London photography.
