Crowds gather at Harpended Christmas Carnival

With summer well and truly over after last week’s brief period of sunshine autumn is creeping in.

This means that winter is only around the corner and people in Hertfordshire (if they want to) can begin to think about the festive season.

Towns across the county have already announced when their Christmas lights will be turned on, with special events planned for families to go out and enjoy the occasion.

Special markets and festivals to celebrate Christmas have been planned to mark the holiday and events will begin as early as November to get everyone into the right spirit before we reach December.

Here are the dates and locations for all the Christmas lights switch ons in Hertfordshire.

Hatfield Christmas Lights Switch On

The first major turning on of the lights in Hertfordshire will take place in Hatfield on Saturday, November 16.

This year’s event will be themed on Snow White, kicking off in Hatfield Town Centre across from White Lion Square, The Arcade and Market Place.

Families will be able to meet Campus West WGC’s Snow White pantomime stars at the switch on, and can also watch stage performances, visit Santa in his grotto and go on fun fair rides.

Christmas items will be on sale for those seeking to buy presents, while there will also be a big selection of food and drink to have for the big switch on.

St Albans Christmas lights switch-on

St Albans will have a big switch-on event in the city on Sunday, November 17, with more than 12,000 people expected at the event.

Times have not yet been released, but businesses and community groups have come together to produce a programme including Santa’s grotto, live music, food, drink and gift stalls and a fun fair.

St Albans business improvement district will also run Santa’s Post Office from November 14 to December 23 at Christopher Place Shopping Centre.Whats On

Hitchin Chistmas Tree Lights Switch On

This is the first year Hitchin‘s Christmas lights switch on will occur on a Saturday, on November 30, with organisers aiming to build on the event year on year.

Hertford Christmas Tree Light Switch On

Starting at 12pm and ending at 6pm, the event will include choirs, entertainment, Santa’s Parade and a special guest to turn on the lights.

Hertford Christmas Gala

Hertford‘s annual Christmas Gala will return this year in the town centre on Friday, November 22.

Those in attendance will be treated to Christmas markets, a performance stage, Christmas grotto, street entertainment, fairground rides and the Christmas tree light switch on.

It will be held from 3.30pm till 8pm, with last year’s event also featuring a reindeer petting stall.

Knebworth Christmas Lights Switch On

The fourth Christmas lights switch on event in Knebworth will return this year on Friday, November 22, from 5pm to 8.30pm.

It will be held at St Martins Church,  and last year’s event featured Christmas market stalls, fun fair, Santa’s grotto, giant snow globe, choir, performances, face painting, DJ and more.

Harpenden Christmas Carnival

Harpenden Christmas Carnival will be on Sunday November 24 this year, returning to Harpenden High Street from 12pm.

Harpended Christmas Carnival

The carnival will include the monthly Farmer’s Market which is being extended for the occasion up to Santa’s Grotto on Thompsons Close.

There will be a fun fair, main stage, stilt-walkers, walk about entertainment and procession before the big lights switch on at 5pm.

Tring Christmas Festival

Tring’s annual Christmas Festival will begin on Friday, November 29, with the High Street being transformed into a Christmas Market and shops and businesses opening later.

Last year’s event kicked off at 6.30pm on the High Street, with Father Christmas making an appearance at Victoria Hall and a full programme of entertainment being provided on he main stage in Church Square.

It also feature Morris Dancing, Christmas Tree on stilts and a fun fair, so expect this year to offer similar festivities to celebrate the big turning on of the lights.

Paper Mill in Hemel Hempstead Switch on

The Paper Mill in Hemel Hempstead has got another big tree this year and will have its lights turned on in style on Saturday, November 30.

The Choir from St Mary’s Church will perform, and mince pies will be served while people are invited to sing along to carols before the lights turn on.

Festivities begin at 4.30pm and the lights will be turned on at 5pm, and there will also be a collection box for those wishing to donate to the church.

Redbourn Christmas Market

The pretty, historic village of Redbourn will be holding its annual Christmas Market on Sunday, December 1 this year.

It is a not-for-profit event organised by volunteers for the benefit of the community, open from 11am until 5pm on the day.

There are over 100 stalls with delicious food, beautiful crafts and gift ideas, while seasonal music, a Yule raffle and Santa Claus himself will all be seen on the day – as well as the big Christmas lights switch on.
