St Nicholas’ School in Church Crookham, Fleet has been named as the best in Hampshire when it comes to GCSE results.

New figures released on Tuesday (February 11) reveal exactly how well students at schools up and down the country did in their GCSE exams in 2019.

Across Hampshire, the average Attainment 8 score a student taking the exams received was a 47.6, with 68% passing both English and maths.ADVERTISING

That’s compared to a nationwide average score of 44.7, with 60% of students passing English and maths with a grade between nine and four.

St Nicholas’ School saw its pupils get an average score of 71.9 – with 100% passing English and maths. No other school in the area performed this well.

Salesian College, in Farnborough, was the next best performing, with its pupils achieving an average Attainment 8 score of 68.4 (and 99% of them passing English and maths.

That was followed by Farnborough Hill (average score of 68.2), Thornden School (Eastleigh – average score of 61.1), and The Westgate School (Winchester – average score of 59.7).

Progress 8 scores

The statistics also looked at students’ Progress 8 scores.

This is a measure of how much pupils have progressed between Key Stage 2 and the end of their GCSEs, compared to other schools.

A school that does well here might not be getting the best grades overall, but will be doing well when it comes to making the pupils they teach perform to the best of their ability.


Schools that are performing in line with the average will have a score of zero, while those that are progressing their pupils the most will have a positive number as their score.

Thornden School, Eastleigh was the best in Hampshire in 2019 when it comes to adding value (with a Progress 8 score of 0.65).
That was followed by The Westgate School, Winchester (0.49), Calthorpe Park School, Fleet (0.47), and Court Moor School, Fleet(0.36).
