Depression is ubiquitous in today’s world. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 6.9% of Americans suffer from the illness. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 350 people globally suffer from depression.
That’s probably not new information that many are fighting against depression. What’s interesting is a famous Hollywood action star recently opened up about his own battle with depression.
“Got tons of responses to this. Thank you. We all go thru the sludge/shit, and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone.” – Dwayne Johnson tweeted.
Dwayne recalls dealing with depression starting at around age 15 after watching his mother try to commit suicide.
“She got out of the car on the Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic.
“Big rigs and cars were swerving out the way. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road.”
“She has no recollection of it whatsoever,” he admitted. “Probably best she doesn’t.”
I think that’s great that Dwayne came forward about his depression which will end up helping others with theirs.
“Hey man, I get it. We all go thru the sludge and shit. Stay strong and make sure you’re talking to good people about it. Us men have a tendency to hold it in. No shame in getting help and wanting to be better.” – Dwayne Johnson.
