The Olympic Torch and the moments leading up to the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron is famous worldwide. But this year’s lighting ceremony left many to insist it looked pornographic.
The lighting ceremony is often very well planned with the host nation hopes to be written into the history books for its spectacular spectacle.
Figure skater Yuna Kim ended the opening ceremony, 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, by transferring the flame of the torch to a large metal coil that climbed up a structure and eventually lit the cauldron.
This lighting of the torch ceremony is one for the record books for how it looked. Spectacular yes, but as the flames rose up the coils, carrying the Olympic flame upwards, many saw an uncanny likeness to a human penis.
Social media was quick to point out the similarities with the male genitalia.
One Twitter user writing, “the Olympic cauldron was just lit by a giant fire penis.”
“Was I the only one to think that was rather phallic?” wrote another.
“Okay, torch lighty thing was very cool. Ever so slightly phallic, but very cool!”
“Was the Olympic torch just lit by a giant robot fire penis?”
“Why did South Korea choose to light the Olympic torch with some sort of flaming robot penis?”
“And in other news, giant fiery penis ignites Olympic egg.”
The ceremony preceding the lighting of the flame was eye-catching with featured child performers, huge puppets, dazzling light displays, and thousands of dancers to celebrate Korean unity.
30,000 people inside the area watched the spectacle in -3C temperatures.
