It happened over the weekend, H&M is accused of being racist for this add for a green hoodie that appeared on their site for the United Kingdom.
The problem is the little boy they had modeling the “coolest monkey in the jungle” sweatshirt. It was a black boy, and people couldn’t get over how racist the add was.
The company was quick to respond to the controversy.
“We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top. The image has been removed from all online channels, and the product will not be for sale in the United States,” a representative for the retailer said in a statement to BUSINESS INSIDER. “We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordingly to avoid any future issues.”
Many people on Twitter felt that the apology was not enough. They pointed out that ‘monkey’ was a well known racist slur.
The add can still be seen with just the green hoodie. It’s no longer being modeled.
