Newsweek’s cover image has been described as “tone deaf,” “terrible” and “wrong.”
It’s an image of a ‘balloon’ penis and testicles being ‘popped’ by a woman holding a sharp needle.
The upcoming November 17 issue is meant to promote their lead article about women fighting against sexual harassment. Taking down powerful men is the gist of the story, and that’s why a deflated or ‘popped’ phallic symbol made sense to Newsweek.
Some on social media questioned why the female empowerment movement meant harming men. Others say Newsweek was trivializing the whole #MeToo movement as satire.
Newsweek has yet to respond to critics.
