Comedian and daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres courted outrage on Wednesday after dedicating a tweet to the “Roar” singer on her birthday that was taken as sexist.
“Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!” the star wrote over an image of her gawking, mouth agape, at Perry’s breasts.
While “It’s time to bring out the big balloons” is a lyric from Perry’s 2013 hit “Birthday,” fans were quick to note that DeGeneres’ sharing the photo seemed like a double standard.
But with emotions running high in the wake of sexual assault and harassment claims against producer Harvey Weinstein, director James Toback, journalist Mark Halperin and former President George H.W. Bush, the image struck a nerve.
Several Twitter users called out DeGeneres for perpetuating a double standard.
Previously, the comedian and talk show host dedicated her opening monologue to denouncing sexual harassment in Hollywood.
“This is not a male thing or a female thing, it is not a Hollywood or political thing, this is a human thing and it happens in the workplace, it happens in families, it happens all over the world and we are all the same,” Ellen said. “We all want the same thing, we want respect, love and kindness. And if I could have those three things and an iPhone X, I’d be happy.”
