A Scotsman is facing a three-year jail sentence in Dubai. His crime was trying to protect his drink while walking through a crowded bar.
As Jamie Harron was walking in the packed bar, he puts his hand on a man hip, so he did not “bump and spill drinks,” according to his attorney.
Campaign group Detained in Dubai said the charges against Jamie is for drinking alcohol and public indecency at Rock Bottom Bar.
The police arrested Jamie about 20-30 minutes after the incident.
A representative from Detained noted that the legal system in Dubai is a mess and leaves victims hanging for extended periods.
Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, said: “It is quite outrageous that he has been held in the country for so long already.
“This is another example of how vulnerable tourists are to arrest and detention in Dubai and at how drawn out and disorganised legal proceedings are.”
That disorganization and lack of communication in Dubai’s legal system has caused Jamie 30 days jail time.
Jamie’s wife added: “I have spoken to Jamie today who is under immense pressure and stress. He was expecting to appear in court this Sunday, but the court moved the date without telling him or his lawyer.
“This led to a sentence of 30 days’ imprisonment for failing to present himself at the hearing.”
Some have noted how strange that it’s illegal to have alcohol in your system and to drink in public but completely legal to sell in Dubai.
Mr. Harron has since lost his job and spent more than £30,000 in expenses. He’s been stuck in Dubai for three months already.
