Matthew Cobos was photographed on Sunday night shielding a young woman from a barrage of bullets by using his body. He used his hands to cover her eyes.
Cobos who is a young US Army soldier bravely went into dangerous areas to help victims of the mass shooting.
This powerful image quickly went viral as news spread that a gunman had opened fire on the 22,000 country music fans at the Route 91 Harvest festival. The photo represented an example of the human spirit’s strength and bravery in the face of death.
The shooter was identified as Stephen Paddock who eventually killed 58 people and injured over 500 at the Route 91 Harvest festival. The event became America’s worst murder ever.
He eventually dragged the woman to safety before returning to help injured concert-goers, risking his life once again.
The Daily Mail said that Cobos plugged bullet holes with his fingers to stop a victim bleeding out and also used his belt as a tourniquet to stem the blood flow.
He is now with family in California, and he told them he could hear and see the bullets ricocheting off the ground in front of him as he ran.
The sheer scale of the number of people killed and injured is unprecedented with 58 dead, and 120 in the hospital with 48 in critical condition. Some injuries were a result of the stampede as people ran for safety.
Cobos lives in Hawaii and is cavalry scout with the US Army.
