According to TMZ, the 66-year-old star was found not breathing and in cardiac arrest.
Tom Petty was reportedly taken off of life support after he was discovered in a nonresponsive state on Sunday in his California home.
Petty, a Florida native, rose to fame in the ’70s as the lead of Tom Petty the Heartbreakers. He’s been touring with his band to mark their 40th anniversary. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Petty describes the group’s pace as “It’s still a wild pace…”
According to Forbes, last week wrapped a long leg of the tour with three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl. Petty described this tour would be his “last big one” during the Rolling Stone interview.
His fans began memorial tweets to the rocker.
Later in the day Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker confirmed Petty’s death on behalf of the family.
“He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends,” Dimitriades said in a statement.
