When you see this latest reincarnation of Princess Diana the first things that come to mind are that someone must be really angry at the royal family or someone has a really wicked sense of humor. Neither assumptions would be true of course. But the image is still a bit scary.
The recreation was meant as a genuine gesture of recognition and praise. No, seriously, it really was.
So what’s wrong with this image? At first glance, you notice the one lazy right eye is a bit of a distraction but then you compare it to the image of the real Princess Diana thinking her right eye is not at all spastic or lazy.
Then you wonder why is her hair all dingy and gray and not blonde like Diana in real life. Obviously, they had yellow because the left and right panels have yellow in it. Also, you may notice how gray her teeth are. Then again you wonder if someone was really intentionally making a mean joke. I mean the whites of her eyes are white so why can’t her teeth be white also and not look like dingy sewer water?
This image of Princess Diana was meant as a tribute during Chesterfield’s well dressing and also a memorial for the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
The town’s ‘well dressing’ celebrations is an annual custom in the country which involves making pictures using just natural material. The design has been created using materials such as carnations, chrysanthemums, chamomile flowers, cow parsley, leaves, grass seeds, rowan berries and egg shell.
And residents had a heyday about how ugly the image was.
“Luckily she had a sense of humour and would probably be laughing if she could see it or cared. But still it needs taking down; it’s not nice at all.” Gayla Tuckley
“Our shops are closing, our Market stalls are empty, we have homeless people in our bus station, our football team is crap and now this.” Roger Fearn
Others were a little more understanding about the floral Diana recognizing the hard work that must have gone into making it.
“Maybe it’s not an exact likeness guys but come on! People have put a lot of effort into this when they didn’t need to! Done something nice for Chesterfield and for Diana” Emma-Leigh Rose
“I’m sure a lot of time went into this … but that is absolutely horrific!!” JF Andrew
While others on Twitter tried to put a positive spin on the situation.
With some jokingly comparing Diana’s image to the Cristiano Ronaldo bronze bust or the ‘scary’ Lucille Ball statue in her hometown.
Chesterfield Borough Council was quick to hit back saying that the flowery recreation of Diana got the publicity intended by the organizers.
“All art is meant to be a talking point and that certainly seems to be the case with this year’s design.
“All art is meant to be a talking point and that certainly seems to be the case with this year’s design. “The well dressing is designed to attract visitors to the area and if the publicity encourages more people to come and visit the market and local shops then that can only be good for Chesterfield.” A Spokesperson
