Reese Witherspoon, the 41-year-old actress doesn’t quite understand why women who are ambitious have gotten such a bad rap. She may not quite understand it but she’s definitely not going to sit by quietly. Reese wants to smash through that stigma saying that ambitious women strive to make an impact.
The ‘Big Little Lies’ star thinks it’s time society starts to look at ambition in women in a whole different light.
“A couple of years ago I wrote a speech of Glamour Women of the Year about why ambition in women is considered a dirty word. And we do kind of think, they’ve done all these studies at Harvard and Colombia…”
The star who’s known for her leading lady roles in successful films such as Legally Blonde, This Means War, Cruel Intentions, and Sweet Home Alabama is out promoting her newest movie ‘Home Again.’
‘Home Again’ is a comedy about a single mom living in Los Angeles taking an unexpected turn when she allows three young guys to move in with her.
Reese gets to explore the idea of ambition in her new movie ‘Home Again.’ She plays a newly separated woman who is trying to figure out the “next chapter” of her life.
“My character is separated. She’s got two little kids. She doesn’t know what she’s going to do with her life. She has to move back home. She feels really untethered. It’s really about a woman finding what the next chapter in her life is gonna be.”
As for Reese, she remembers always being ambitious even as a young child.
“I remember in third grade, they went around the room and said ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ And this one wanted to be doctor, that one wanted to be an astronaut, and I said ‘I want to be the first female president of the United States of America.’ And you know what? To my teacher’s credit, she goes ‘I’m gonna vote for you Reesie.’ And I just thought, wasn’t that sweet?”
Reese believes that most ambitious women are seen as self-serving and that’s just not true. She believes that these women have a mission or a drive to help other people, to accomplish something.
